When it comes to portraits you want to wear something that shows off your personality, you want it to be comfortable, and to "go with" others in the photos. This doesn't mean it has to match exactly, a POP of color always looks great. So, if you have a pattern, like plaid, or floral, on your shirt or dress consider others to have clothes that have similar colors in solid shirts, dresses, etc. Its always ok to have same prints, but the eye will be drawn to all the people in the photo if there is an array of color. One option would be to wear button up shirt with complimentary under shirt that can be exposed to help with variation. I hope this helps.
